Ansgar Nierhoff

Ansgar Nierhoff

Ansgar Nierhoff (1941-2010) counts as one of Germany's major steel sculptors. After studying at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf with Norbert Kricke, he soon became recognised for his deformations of hollow stainless steel bodies. From 1977 he discovered rolling and unrolling, folding and unfolding. The forged works, such as stretchings, polyhedrons, bundlings, and the multipart sculptural assemblies then followed. From 1988 to 2008 Nierhoff was professor of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. From 1965 until his death he lived in Cologne.
